I've been spending alot of time there for 19yrs. Watching the Eagles, studying snakes, and the biggest catfish I've caught ever. My largest was 48lbs 6oz flathead caught from the bank

I worked with the maintenance crew as a volunteer in the summer of 1995. They faced poisonous snakes daily doing their duties. I know, I was in the water channel, wrapping chains around willows to clear the channel of debris. I got to give them all 5 stars for their efforts to make the refuge the best it can be for wildlife habitat. You have to walk to your destination, no driving allowed, back then anyway. I walked miles to get to my favorite hole. The Copperheads were 7 feet in length on average. The Moccasins were 5 feet average length but very aggressive. One killed a Bass I was reeling in. I didn't eat that fish. If you go there, expect to see snakes. Sometimes, lots of them. If you are scared of snakes, avoid this refuge in the summer months. They are lively when it's really warm...

Wounderful place but not a lot of river access from there. And it closes after dark.

Beautiful serene wonder! A great place to see wild life. It's clean & quiet. The have plenty of info posted so that you can see what you are looking at & explain how the eco system works. Love it here. We have been taking our children here for many years. They are now older teens & still enjoy going. In the fall they have different organizations come & teach the young & the young at heart all types of outdoor knowledge located at the refuge. They also have local buses that run that day through the sanctuary for people to enjoy the scenery. They do not charge for anything during these events. You can drive through 5 times a day free of charge. Great learning experience for our kids & also great for our environment. Not many places of beauty left untouched.

Great place for turkey and deer hunting.. Just be sure to get the 065 permit and enjoy. Also its great for biking and walking.
